Week Seven Review

With players breaking for the International break, this is another time to talk about how the Serie A faired over the weekend.

Antonio Conte’s Napoli seems to be on a serious journey in their bid to reclaim the league title, with Juventus dropping points once again. But how did other games fare?

McTominay scores as Napoli beats Como

Former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay scored as Napoli beat Como 3-1 to consolidate their lead at the top of the table.

The Scotland International first goal came after 25 seconds after being teed up by Romelu Lukaku but Como equalized through Gabriel Strefezza’s low, long-range strike that sailed through a crowded box into the bottom left corner two minutes before the break.

Lukaku restored the hosts’ lead from the penalty spot eight minutes into the second half after Sergi Roberto brought down Mathías Olivera; David Neres scored the hosts’ third of the evening.

With the win, Antonio Conte’s Napoli tops the table with 16 points after seven matches.

Juventus held by Cagliari in a dramatic match

Juventus conceded their first goal this season under Thiago Motta as Cagliari fought back to hold them to a 1-1 draw on Sunday.

The match’s first goal came from a controversial penalty decision, awarded after a VAR review deemed that Cagliari’s Sebastiano Luperto had grazed the ball with his fingers during an aerial battle. Despite protests that he was off balance and under pressure from Federico Gatti, the referee pointed to the spot, and Vlahovic converted for his fifth goal of the season.

Razvan Marin however lashed home the 88th-minute leveller to give Cagliari a point at the Allianz Stadium after Douglas Luiz clumsily brought down Roberto Piccoli.  Cagliari nearly grabbed a last-minute victory when Adam Obert struck the post in stoppage time, with Juventus reduced to 10 men following Francisco Conceicao’s red card.

The point moved the visitors up to 15th, a point above the relegation zone.

Thuram’s and Rategui score hattricks

Marcus Thuram and Mateo Rategui both scored hattricks over the weekend as Inter Milan and Atalanta recorded respective wins.

Thuram scored all three goals as Inter Milan overcame Torino 3-2 on Saturday.  The hosts had an advantage in the match when Torino was reduced to ten men just after 20 minutes following the sending-off of Guillermo Maripan.

Thuram headed Alessandro Bastoni’s cross in off the inside of the left post just five minutes after the red card and doubled his and the hosts’ tally 15 minutes later but Duván Zapata reduced the deficit almost immediately.

Thuram completed his first hat-trick for Inter on the hour mark but Nikola Vlasic netted a penalty for Torino with three minutes remaining for a nervy finish but Inter held on to move second in the table.

In another game that witnessed a hattrick, Retegui scored three goals as Atalanta ran riot over Genoa with a 5-1 win. It was a bitter-sweet outing for Retegui whose first team in the Italian top flight was Genoa after joining from Argentine outfit Boca Juniors in 2023.

The Argentina-born Italy forward spent a season at Genoa before moving to Atalanta in the offseason. After each of his goals against his former club, Retegui just held up his hand almost in apology before he was embraced by his Atalanta teammates.
