Ligue One Season 2024/25

Round Eight Review

After the International break, the French Ligue One returned with some mouthwatering clashes.

It was a weekend where Monaco lost ground in their bid to stay top of the table with Marseille returning to winning ways in a round that PSG also won. We take a look at the major talking points of the round.

Marseille runs riot against Montpellier

After a slow end towards to the international break, Marseille made no mistakes on Sunday after putting five goals past a hapless Montpellier.

A defeat by Strasbourg and a draw with Angers had threatened to derail Marseille’s season, but the team was at its best on Sunday, and the win cut the gap between them and top teams PSG and Monaco.

Elye Wahi nodded home Jonathan Rowe’s header across goal in the first minute for the opener. Amine Harit added a second in the 36th minute, before Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg effectively wrapped up the points before half-time. Mason Greenwood collected Wahi’s through ball and drove forward before picking out the bottom corner to score his first goal since August. Luis Henrique completed the scoring with 17 minutes left after Montpellier youngster Stefan Dzodic had been sent off.

Monaco relinquish top spot after being held by Lille

French Ligue 1 leaders Monaco moved to second spot after being held to a goalless draw by Lille in a game that they finished with ten men.

Monaco had to play a man down for the last 30 minutes after Dutch international Jordan Teze was red-carded for an ugly challenge on Gabriel Gudmundsson. Despite being outnumbered, Monaco continued to press for a winner with Maghnes Akliouche setting up Denis Zakaria but his injury-time strike was well-saved by Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier.

PSG reclaim top spot after Strasbourg Win

Paris Saint-Germain went back on top of the Ligue 1 table following their 4-2 win over Strasbourg.

Youngster Senny Mayulu’s first Ligue 1 goal set PSG on their way before Marco Asensio, Bradley Barcola and Lee Kang-in also found the net in the rain at the Parc des Princes. Sekou Mara and Pape Diong were on target for Liam Rosenior’s Strasbourg, but the defeat means the side from Alsace have still never won away to PSG in 34 attempts.

Monaco’s 0-0 draw at home to Lille on Friday had given PSG the opportunity to go back to the summit and they seized the opportunity despite coach Luis Enrique rotating his squad with an eye on Tuesday’s Champions League clash with PSV Eindhoven.

Ousmane Dembele, Achraf Hakimi, Fabian Ruiz and captain Marquinhos were among the players left on the bench with Mayulu one of five players aged 20 or under in PSG’s starting XI.

Earlier Brest and Rennes drew 1-1 in a Brittany derby before Lens won 2-0 at Saint-Etienne to maintain their unbeaten record this season.
