Season 2024/25 Round One Review

The Ligue One, just as most top five European League, Kicked Off this weekend with a lot of mouthwatering games on show.

Paris Saint Germain started life without Kylian Mbappe with Mason Greenwood wasting no time in reminding the French people about his potential by grabbing a brace in his Marseille league debut. But what were the other major talking points in round one of the 2024/25 season in the French top tier?

Money Spending Lyon Thumped by Rennes

Rennes enjoyed a commanding 3-0 victory over big-spending Lyon in the French league on Sunday.

Benjamin Bourigeaud opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a deflected free kick. Just over a minute later, Amine Gouiri doubled Rennes’ lead after a swift counterattack. Henrik Meister, a Danish striker acquired by Rennes this summer, sealed the win with a stoppage-time goal to cap a dominant performance.

Portuguese goalkeeper Anthony Lopes, the captain and a regular starter for Lyon over the past decade, was an unused substitute today.

Rennes thus joined a group of teams that won their opening fixtures: reigning champions , Marseille, Lille, Auxerre, Monaco, and Lens.

Welcome to Ligue One Mason Greenwood

Mason Greenwood netted twice as he made his competitive bow for Olympique de Marseille. Against Brest.

The Englishman opened the scoring after just three minutes before converting a penalty 28 minutes later in what was a comfortable 5-1 win for Marseille over their Champions League-bound opponents.

Despite his two goals, Greenwood was outshone by some of his teammates. Luis Enrique and Amine Harit, who notched a brace of goals and assists respectively, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli all received higher match ratings, as per FootballCritic.

Prior to his signing, Marseille fans had launched a social media campaign against the striker and it will be interesting to see how they will react when he makes his home debut.
