Euro 2024 Review
After 30 days, 51 matches, 117 goals and plenty of drama, Euro 2024 concluded on Sunday evening (July 14). Euro 2024 will go down as one of the best tournaments, and if you were a neutral following, you would not have been disappointed. From fairytale success stories of minnows Georgia and Slovenia reaching the round of 16 to Croatia’s shock early group stage exit. Euro 2024 Champions
Spain was crowned 2024 European Champions and set a new record by winning the prize for the fourth time. Throughout the tournament, there was no doubt that Spain was the best team and deserved the crown. Their Euro 2024 record read: seven games played, seven wins, 15 goals scored, and just four conceded. They came through the group of death and navigated their way through a tough bracket, beating the likes of Croatia, Italy, Germany, France and England.

Euro 2024 Golden Boot Winners
Ahead of the tournament, UEFA announced a new criteria for the Golden Boot Winners: whoever scores the most goals will be crowned top scorer, irrespective of a tie. There were six winners, each scoring three goals in the tournament. Congratulations to Cody Gakpo, Dani Olmo, Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, Ivan Schranz and Georges Mikautadze.

Spain overcame England 2-1 in the Euro 2024 Final thanks to goals from Nico Williams and Mikel Oyarzarbal. The first half was a cagey affair with little to write about. However, the second half delivered spectacularly right from the off. Spain came out guns blazing and made the breakthrough when the youngsters combined, as Yamine Lamal teed up Nico Williams to put the Spanish 1-0 up in the 46th minute.
Gareth Southgate went to his bench in the 70th minute and brought on Cole Palmer, which proved a masterstroke. Not three minutes later, the Chelsea youngster produced a moment of brilliance as he scored a belter into the bottom left corner from 25 yards out. Spain had one final trick up their sleeve, and like his English counterpart, Spain boss Luis De La Fuente turned to his bench, particularly attacker Mikel Oyarzarbal. The Real Sociedad captain was the hero for La Roja when he coolly slotted home in the 85th minute to put Spain ahead, and after 90 minutes, Spain was rightfully crowned Euro 2024 Champions.

Spain beat France 2-1 to book their spot in the Euro 2024 Final. France took an early lead thanks to Randal Kolo Muani’s header. Spain hit back quickly and turned the tie around when they scored two quick-fire goals in four minutes. Barcelona teen sensation Lamine Yamal became the youngest scorer at a European Championship when he scored a sensational 25-yard curling effort in the 21st minute. Spain completed the comeback and claimed the win three minutes later as Dani Olmo produced some brilliant footwork inside the box before his deflected effort went in off a Jules Kounde block.
England overcame the Netherlands 2-1 in the second semifinal to secure a place in yet another Euro Final. The Netherlands took a seventh-minute lead thanks to a superb strike by Xavi Simons. England soon responded as Harry Kane was fouled and scored the resulting penalty thanks to VAR intervention. Gareth Southgate brought on Cole Palmer and Ollie Watkins in the 80th minute, and those two changes proved the difference, as Cole Palmer assisted Ollie Watkins, who scored the winner with a brilliant finish in the 90th minute.
With their wins, Spain and England progressed to the Euro 2024 Final and were one step away from being crowned European Champions.
Recap of Euro 2024 Quarterfinals
Spain and Germany treated fans to a spectacular opening quarterfinal game with everything from goals to a plethora of yellow cards, a red card, extra time and a 118th-minute winner. In the end, Spain prevailed 2-1 after extra time thanks to goals from Dani Olmo and Mikel Merino.
The second quarterfinal followed the same script as the first, and once again, more than 90 minutes were needed to find a winner. Even an additional 30 minutes of extra time was not enough, and the game went to penalties. France scored all five penalties to prevail 5-3 in the shootout.
The extra time and penalties trend continued for the third quarterfinal between England and Switzerland. The game was tied 1-1 after 90 minutes and an additional 30 minutes of extra time. Penalties were required, and Manuel Akanji’s missed spot kick proved the difference as England won the shootout 5-3 and booked their ticket to the Euro 2024 semifinals.
In the final quarterfinal of Euro 2024, the Netherlands fought back from a goal down to beat Turkiye 2-1. Turkiye took a first-half lead, but they fell apart in six second-half minutes, as the Dutch secured the vital win and progressed to their first Euro semifinals since 2004.
For Spain, France, England and the Netherlands, Euro 2024 glory was still a possibility. With four teams left and two semifinal spots available, the Euro 2024 semifinal fixtures were set.

Recap of Euro 2024 Round of 16
In the first game of the round of 16, Switzerland outran, outpressed, outplayed and outscored Italy en route to a comfortable and deserved 2-0 win. Goals from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas secured progress to the quarterfinals for the Swiss.
Germany beat Denmark 2-0 in their round of 16 game. German attackers Kai Havertz and Jamal Musiala each scored to send the home team to the quarterfinals.
England beat Slovakia 2-1 in a drama-filled round of 16 match. Slovakia went ahead in the first half, but England scored at the death from a Jude Bellingham overhead kick, which sent the game to extra time. Harry Kane scored the winner early in extra time to send England to the quarterfinals.
Spain thrashed Georgia 4-1 in their round of 16 encounter to progress to the quarterfinals. Georgia took a shock lead, but Spain fought back to win the game. Rodri, Fabian Ruiz, Nico Williams and Dani Olmo were all on the scoresheet for La Roja.
France beat Belgium 1-0 in a dull and slow-paced game and progressed to the quarterfinals. France scored the winner from a Jan Vertonghen own goal late in the game.
Portugal and Slovenia played out a 0-0 draw, which saw the game head all the way to penalties. Diogo Costa’s heroics meant Portugal won the shootout 3-0 and progressed to the quarterfinals.
Netherlands comfortably beat Romania 3-0 to book their ticket to the quarterfinals. A Cody Gakpo first-half goal and a second-half brace from substitute Donyell Malen was enough for the Dutch to progress.
The final game of the round of 16 witnessed the only upset of the round as Turkiye shocked Austria 2-1 and progressed to the quarterfinals. Turkiye defender Merih Demiral was the unlikely hero as he scored both goals for the team.
For Spain, Germany, Portugal, France, England, Switzerland, Netherlands and Turkiye, the Euro 2024 journey went on. All eight teams were left to duel it out for the trophy, and the quarterfinal fixtures were set.

Group A
Germany won Group A with two wins and a draw. Switzerland finished the group as runners-up with a win and two draws. Hungary finished third in Group A with three points and was NOT one of the four best third-placed finishers. Scotland finished last in the group with zero wins and just one point.

Group B
Spain finished atop Group B with nine points and a 100% record. Italy finished the group stages on four points and as group runners-up. Group C
Statistically, Group C was the worst-performing group in Euros 2024. Six matches, five draws and only seven goals between four teams make for sorry reading. England finished atop the group with 5 points. Denmark and Slovenia finished with identical records, and disciplinary points were used to determine the runner-ups. Ultimately, Denmark finished second, and Slovenia also qualified for their first-ever knockout round as one of the best third-placed finishers. It was a disappointing tournament for Serbia, who headed home with zero wins.

Group D
Group D was the group of death, which was very competitive. France, Austria and the Netherlands all took turns leading the group on the final matchday, but in the end, Austria was the surprise group winner with 6 points. France finished second with 5 points, and the Netherlands third with 4 points. All three qualified for the round of 16. Poland propped up the table and headed home with zero wins.

Group E
Statistically, if Group C was the worst-performing group in Euro 2024, Group E was the most competitive. All four teams won once, drew once, and lost once in their games, and all finished with four points. Romania won the group thanks to a better head-to-head with Belgium. Belgium finished second, and Slovakia qualified in third place as one of the four best third-placed finishers. Finally, there was Ukraine, the most unlucky team at Euro 2024. They went home despite finishing with four points and a better tally than half of the teams who qualified as one of the best third-placed finishers.

Group F
Portugal won Group F with six points and a better head-to-head with Turkiye. The second spot went to Turkiye. Euro 2024 debutant Georgia secured their passage into the round of 16 as one of the best third-placed finishers. Czechia claimed the wooden spoon in Group F and went home with zero wins.
